It’s that time of year when we start making our own quick iced coffee at home. It saves us a lot of empty calories and money, making it a perfect cold summer drink for the coffee addict! Just because it’s summer shouldn’t mean that your coffee sets your dietary goals on their ear.
Quick Iced Coffee Methods
We have a couple of ways that we make quick iced coffee when the temps get turned up outside, like they have today! As I write this it is 32 degrees out and not yet noon! I’m more of an “on the rocks” kind of person, while Frank prefers “blended” ice – more iced cap style of iced coffee.
Keurig + Blendtec
Using our Keurig and decaf Swiss Water Process Coffee from Van Houtte, we make up a cup of coffee and then pour it over ice in our Blendtec. If we’ve thought ahead, we might even have put a box of almond milk in the freezer and will use that with the blender! We use Blue Diamond Unsweetened Almond Milk. Now, I realized that going out to buy these kitchen appliances does not particularly make price effective cup of iced coffee! It really just works, because that’s what we’ve got!

Cold Brewed Iced Coffee
Another option for making quick iced coffee at home is to cold brew it and leave it in the fridge, ready to grab when the moment hits that you want a cold drink! Then I pour it over a tall glass of ice! BOZ Cold Brew Iced Coffee Maker is a stylish, easy to use option. And it even comes with an iced coffee recipe book! You can store your cold brew in the fridge for days, although I’ll bet it will be used up long before that!
Save Calories – Go Sugar-Free
We usually drink our hot coffee without sugar, but there is something really nice about a bit of sweet in that iced coffee that we both really like. Having been with Frank’s dad and trying to “walk the talk” when it comes to sugar these days, we’ve been avoiding “white death” otherwise, probably known to you as sugar.
Xylo Sweet >> Xylitol
When looking for a titch of sweet, we’ve been using Xylo Sweet. Xylo Sweet is a brand of xylitol. There are lot of other brands out there, but we generally find Xylo Sweet 5lb Bag to be the best priced!
It is a sugar-alcohol, that has a similar sweetness to sugar, without the dreaded aftertaste that sweetners often have. It also would seem to be kind to not only blood sugar levels, but also to insulin levels, which is a win-win, in our opinion! If you haven’t used xylitol before, go easy, it is metabolized differently than sugar, and can give you some intestinal upset if you over-do it. We try to limit ourselves to no more than 2 teaspoons each per day – ideally spread out over the day.
When it comes to how much you use in your iced coffee, it is really a matter of taste. We usually get by with about a 1/2 teaspoon each.
Torani >> Sugar-Free Syrups
Are you looking to add some flavour to your iced coffee. Vanilla Bean or Hazelnut or Almond Roca (a la amaretto!) sugar-free syrups from Torani are a great way to go! They of course carry regular syrups as well, if you aren’t looking for a sugar-free option! And they have some great flavours! Thinking we’ll try the Sugar-Free Irish Cream next!
Torani even offers a pump for their 750ml bottles! A great way to make quick iced coffee at home taste just like it does at the coffee shop without the calories and for a fraction of the cost!
Serve up your Quick Iced Coffee and Enjoy!
Double walled insulated cups or cold cups are great for not only keeping your coffee hot – but also keeping it cold. The double wall also helps to minimize the amount of condensation that pours down the side of your cup on a hot, humid day!
We love these Bodum Bistro 10 oz Mugs!
Cold cups with straws are another favourite of ours for serving up a quick iced coffee at home!
Starbucks does a super job with their 20 oz Cold Cup
