A Blog about AGING AND MORE with Grace + Frank
Every new idea starts with a seed and our blog about AGING AND MORE with Grace + Frank is no different. Its seed was planted yesterday as Frank and I [Grace] took a day off from full-time caregiving for Frank’s folks. And today, our little seed sprouted into a blog about Aging and More!
The Prepared Soil
So, Frank and I were abruptly thrown into a situation of full-time caregiving for his folks this past February. My father-in-law was suddenly admitted to hospital for an exacerbation of his neuromuscular condition. As a result, Frank was on a plane 2 days later to help provide extra support to his mom. She is awaiting her own surgery. And consequently dealing with mobility challenges at this time.
What we thought might be a 7-10 day hospital admission, slowly continued extending. At the 10-day mark it was clear that we were several weeks away from the situation stabilizing to the point that Frank could leave his folks on their own. With his dad still in hospital, and Frank starting to get run down, I took a leave from my work and join him.
After a full 6 weeks in hospital, Frank’s dad was finally able to come home. And in time for his 86th birthday! But his health has not returned to what it was prior to his hospitalization. And we have been working full-time for the past 3 weeks just to keep up with the caregiving needs around their home. Navigating his medication changes, medical appointments, mobility challenges, general weakness and nutritional considerations, keeps us hopping!
A Day of Rest Waters the Soul and a Little Seed Idea
So, yesterday Frank and I took a day of respite while Frank’s brother stepped in to take care of the responsibilities around the house. The weather these past few months has been pretty bleak. Finally, yesterday the skies cleared and we had our first sunny day in weeks! Feeling the warm, spring sun shining on our faces was welcoming beyond words. We went exploring around town and found a few spectacular vantage points from which to enjoy the vistas of freshly snow-dusted mountains. Refreshment for our weary, thirsty souls!
During a walk and a “state of the union” chin-wag, it was clear that we are both exhausted from the past few months. On the other hand, we have been richly blessed from being available and able to serve Frank’s folks during this difficult and challenging time. We’ve longed for the opportunity to just hang-out and spend more quality time with our aging parents. Seems like we’ve landed ourselves square in the middle of that very opportunity.
Now, we’re facing decisions about how we support them going forward. Consequently, we planted a little seed idea.
A Little Seed Sprouts
There have been so many times over the course of the past weeks that I have wished that I had guidance in navigating these new waters with aging parents. And I have sadly come up empty-handed. Many times I wished for a template or resource that I could use to fill the gap or need that we had identified. Much as I’ve searched, time after time I have stopped and just got to work in creating the chart or template that we needed to meet our situation.
Having worked as a Registered Nurse, I know full well the extent of complexities and variations to people’s medical situations. Seems like there is no cookie-cutter, garden-variety solution. No one-size fits all approach when it comes to our own personal health situations. We are each uniquely different. So, perhaps that is why it has been a challenge to find the perfect sized solutions that fit our needs exactly. Either way, I wish to share the learnings we are going through and hopefully equip others to navigate these challenging waters, better prepared than we ourselves have been.
Enter: Aging and More
AGING AND MORE began as a nameless idea. More a concept than anything else really. And within a few short hours it had its name and its .com home on the inter-webs! So while the little seed has just sprouted and is yet young and tender and needing much nurturing, we know that with time and care it can grow into a mighty oak of knowledge. It is my prayer that many will find comfort and resources that help them along their journey. And that it will bless you as you endeavour to support your own aging loved ones.
But “Aging” on its own does not encompass all that we’d like to share. As a result, we’ve added “and More” to the blog title! Be it travel, health, finances, fashion, leisure, gardening or more.
